Preparing for an Apprenticeship Interview: Tips to Make a Strong Impression

Congratulations!

You've landed a final interview with an employer! This alone puts you in the top 20% of TradeFoundry applicants. This is potentially a life-changing moment, so we want you to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your interview and make a strong impression.

Make sure your environment and the tech is right (assuming it’s a video interview)

Install and test the technology platform (ie. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc) in advance to make sure you know how it works and your device can utilize it. Make sure you do the interview in a quiet place with good lighting and try to keep the camera still. If you are using your phone, it’s a good idea to set it on a stable surface where the camera is still and clearly showing your face. You don’t want to give the impression that you’re fidgety or nervous. If the camera is moving too much it can make the interviewer nauseous!

Research the employer

Before the interview, research the company you're interviewing with. Read about their history, their values, and their projects. Be sure to watch the YouTube videos we’ve sent you for your particular program.

Read this blog post that explains what employers are looking for in apprenticeship candidates.

Some common questions you may be asked include

  • Why do you want to be an electrician? If you are making a change later in your career, you need to explain why you’re doing this and you realize an apprenticeship is essentially starting at the bottom. You will need to show drive and passion for the career change.
  • What experience do you have with electrical, construction, or working with your hands? They are looking for experience demonstrating hands on mechanical aptitude. Highlight any experience with power tools, hand tools, building something, etc.
  • What are your career goals? Hint.. to crush your apprenticeship and become a licensed journeyman in four years!
  • What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?
  • What are some best practices you've learned about safety? What makes you a safe person to work around?
  • Attendance and punctuality is very important, if we were to call your former manager and ask, what would they say?
  • Do you have reliable means of transportation?
  • Are you willing to work overtime, weekends, or holidays?

Background check and drug test

Nearly all employers require you to pass a background check and drug test.

Be prepared with questions

You want to end the interview on a high note. It’s a good idea to have a few questions ready to ask if the opportunity presents itself. This shows the interviewer you're interested in the position and you've done your research. It also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the company and the apprenticeship program. Some potential questions include:

  • What do you look for in an ideal apprentice candidate?
  • What kind of training and mentorship do apprentices receive?
  • What opportunities for growth and advancement are available within the company?
  • How are you guys utilizing technology on job sites or in your facility?

Preparing for an apprenticeship interview takes effort but is well worth it. Good luck!
